For those who have asked why Virginia Calcutti is running as a "write-in" candidate and not a "regular" candidate, please read the following letter from Don Daubney, former village trustee. When Croton moved its elections from March to November, the existing board may have enjoyed a bonus of six extra months in office, but the village now has to follow county rules--and the rest of us are losers:
To the editor:
When Virginia Calcutti declared herself to be a write in candidate for the Village Board of Trustees many people wondered why she was not on the ballot instead.
Two years ago when the people of Croton voted to have our village election moved to tie into the national elections, we abandoned all control over our own village elections. Our local election is now governed by the Westchester County Board of Elections. Many residents of our village, anxious to see Virginia Calcutti on the ballot , formed a Unity Party line for Virginia , who is a registered Democrat. All proper documents were signed and submitted to White Plains in September. However, she was rejected because their cutoff date was last July. The loss of control is visible in many other aspects as well. An example is that results of our election may not be known immediately when the village operated the election.
As a former village trustee, I continue to attend many village board meetings, and when I do not attend I watch them on television as they are in progress. Virginia Calcutti attends almost every meeting, always with excellent questions and profound insight as to what is taking place in Croton. By Contrast, Mr. Levitt, the village Democrat choice of candidates, has been noticeably un-involved and not present at these meetings, the exception being last week now that he is a candidate. Virginia Calcutti has a long history of community involvement with common sense thinking which she will bring to our village as an elected official.
It is healthy to have diverse opinions on a Village Board. It creates better discussion regarding important decisions. At this time our Villager Board does not reflect that. The public deserves to have answers to questions that they take the time to bring to village meetings, not to be told "we are here to listen, not to give answers." Virginia Calcutti will provide answers. I urge you to give her your vote by casting a write in for her. If you are uncertain how to do this, you can ask for assistance. Remember to vote on Tuesday, November 5th.
