This is my letter, in the 10/31/13 edition of THE GAZETTE.
To the Editor:
Congratulations to the opponents of the Croton Gorge Cell Tower; their petition gathered 279 signatures.
Based on that petition, the mayor made a statement that “there wasn't enough public support for going forward with the cell tower and had the village manager call Homeland Towers and tell them that.” (See http://chn.ge/16UY4ce)
As such, an email was sent to the mayor and the board advising them that 320 hard copy and online signatures had been gathered against the Gouveia Gift (the number has since risen significantly). The mayor was asked, using his own criteria for the cell tower, that he also instruct the village manager to call Mr. Gouveia and inform her that there was “not enough public support” for her gift.
Not surprisingly, there has been no response.
So why is the mayor “listening” to the public on the cell tower and not Gouveia for which there is so much more opposition? The answer is simple: Mr. Wiegman didn’t want the cell tower and has said so many times. On the other hand, he has repeatedly demonstrated that he wants the Gouveia property, even going so far as to compare it to the Teatown nature preserve in a recent board meeting. Even worse, although claims have been made by the board and reported in the Gazette that an alleged “religious institution” wants the property, he accused a resident of essentially mischaracterizing these claims upon further questioning by that resident.
To re-cap, the Gouveia “gift” is only a done deal when people stay home. You can sign the petition here: http://bit.ly/1ioBKy2
Unless of course, you don’t mind paying Mrs. Gouveia’s annual taxes for possibly decades to come—and for the costly pie in the sky dreams outlined in the “three phase plan” of Mayor Wiegman and Trustee Gallelli. You can read all about it in these documents obtained through freedom of information: http://on.fb.me/1auVwFz
